Candace Worth’s New York City Guide
Welcome to APAA’s series celebrating the intersection of travel and art around the world. This collection spotlights insider perspectives from our global membership, as we invite members to share personal guides to their cities—highlighting favorite restaurants, bars, things to do, and, most importantly, art.
Born and raised in New York, APAA advisor Candace Worth shares her insider City Guide just in time for New York Art Week. Candace has spent 25 years as a private advisor, attending countless NYC art events and celebrations, and has accumulated a list of the most talked-about exhibitions, can’t-miss museum shows, and restaurants everyone’s trying to book.
Museums
In addition to the numerous major arts institutions, here are a few favorites worth adding to anyone’s NYC art guide:
This intimate Beaux-Arts mansion/museum is a true gift to our city from collectors Ronald Lauder and Serge Sabarsky, with major Klimt and Schiele works on permanent view, as well as German and Austrian decorative objects from the early 20th century. Have a coffee and an apple strudel at the Viennese-style Café Sabarsky overlooking Central Park, and don’t overlook the incredible bookstore and tiny gift shop.
The new Studio Museum in Harlem is not to be missed. Community-driven and focused on Black culture, the building, collection, and residency program are an important and unique element in NYC’s contemporary art landscape.
Walter de Maria’s New York Earth Room and Broken Kilometer
Two iconic permanent conceptual art installations from the 1970s, commissioned by Dia Art Foundation; and in their original loft locations in Soho.
Dia Beacon is one of my favorite art destinations in the United States. A massive former Nabisco factory converted to house the majority of Dia’s collection of art from the 1960s to the present, including permanent installations by Andy Warhol, Agnes Martin, Robert Ryman, and Sol LeWitt, just to name a few.
Exhibitions
In addition to TEFAF, Frieze, Independent, and NADA fairs, Candace is excited to explore the new spring gallery exhibitions, especially:
