About
Lauren Bender has spent three decades working in the New York art world and has been an independent art advisor since founding her practice in 2006. She works closely with private and corporate clients on all aspects of collecting—from acquisitions and deaccessions to the ongoing development and management of their collections. With deep fluency in both the primary and secondary markets, Lauren helps clients build thoughtful collections of modern and contemporary art that reflect both connoisseurship and individual sensibilities.
Lauren earned a B.A. in Art History from Emory University and an M.A. in Modern Art and Critical Theory from Columbia University. She began her career at James Goodman Gallery before joining Terry Dintenfass, Inc. where she managed the Arthur Dove and Ben Shahn estates. At Martha Parrish and James Reinish, Inc., specialists in American Modernism, she worked closely with the principals on the research, acquisition, and sale of significant 19th- and 20th-century works. This foundation in historical material, combined with her extensive experience in the contemporary market, continues to shape her perspective and approach to collecting today.
Alongside her advisory practice, Lauren was the curator of The Collectors Fund, an art ownership and investment fund focused on 20th -century American art. She currently serves on the Director’s Acquisition Committee of the University of Michigan Museum of Art and on the Committee for Historic Preservation in Scarsdale, New York, and is an advisor to the artist residency program at Studios, Inc., a nonprofit arts organization in Kansas City, Missouri.
