Graham & Friedrich LLC, a Fine Arts Advisory service for private collectors, was formed by Julie Graham and Maria Friedrich in 1998. The company serves a distinguished group of private collectors. For their clients only, the business offers a full range of curatorial services, which include advising on specific acquisitions, the creation of complete collections reflecting the aesthetic of the client, full archival and research services, framing and installation consultation, including the creation of custom collections publications.
Graham & Friedrich works with collectors and corporations to develop fine art collections as well as serves as guest curators to unique projects for institutions and museums. Their first project, as co-curators for the Aspen Art Museum, was POWDER, an exhibition which examined how modern and contemporary artists use pulverized materials in their art making to give infused meaning to the art object. Among artists featured were Jean Dubuffet, Joseph Cornell, Yves Klein, Mark Rothko, Antoni Tapias, and Andy Warhol. Graham & Friedrich specializes in placing modern and contemporary artworks, both European and American, as well as sculpture.
Julie Graham
Julie Graham began her art career in 1976 at the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh under the tutelage of the Curator of Decorative Arts, David Owsley. From 1978 to 1996, she was associated with the Paula Cooper Gallery in New York, five of those years as the Director. During that time she worked with artists such as Lynda Benglis, Robert Gober, Jon Borofsky, Donald Judd, Carl Andre, Robert Mangold, Joel Shapiro, Elizabeth Murray, Jennifer Bartlett, Jackie Winsor, and Alan Shields. She managed the gallery and organized museum and gallery exhibitions around the world. Besides her strong interest in the arts, Julie has served on the boards of The Kitchen, New York (present); Family Centers, Connecticut (present); Overbrook Foundation, New York; Greenwich Historical Society, Greenwich, CT. She is also on the science advisory committee of the New York Botanical Garden and is involved in a number of organizations that promote the environment, human rights issues and social services.
Maria Friedrich
Maria Friedrich began her career in the arts in 1973 as a recipient of an NEA Scholarship to work in the curatorial departments of the Minneapolis Institute of Fine Arts. She continued on to join the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in 1978 as Coordinator of Educational Programs for block buster exhibitions, such as Pompeii 79. Two years later she was appointed Department Head of the Museum of Fine Arts at Faneuil Hall through its tenure until 1981. Friedrich then joined Impressions Gallery, Boston as Co- Director. By invitation, she served as guest curator for Irene G. and Phillip F. Faneuil Gallery, Massachusetts General Hospital (Boston), and at the DeCordova Museum (Lincoln, Mass.). In New York, Friedrich served as a curator at The Research Institute for the Study of Man (New York). Since 1986, Friedrich has organized numerous tours of museum collections, artist studios, and galleries for private individuals and groups as a private advisor. Over the course of her professional life Friedrich has been a member of, or assisted in, numerous professional organizations and social causes, such as ART TABLE, Independent Curators International (ICI), Women in Need, the Brooklyn Museum Contemporary Arts Council, The Prospect Park Alliance, and Children International among many other local and national organizations.
